A new generation of average speed cameras are set to enforce 20mph limits on residential streets and long stretches of rural road after receiving Home Office type approval.
Each camera acts as a network node, allowing cameras to relay information to a central remote server. This reduces the cost compared to the previous generation of cameras, which require a dedicated hard wired link between camera pairs. The average cost of installations will be halved as there is now no need to dig up long sections of verge
The new cameras allow limits to be enforced across a network with a potentially limitless number of entry and exit points. Cambridgeshire County Council started to install the SPECS3 cameras last month on a 4.5 mile Fen road with a 50mph limit.
Transport for London and four London boroughs plan to run camera-enforced 20mph pilots. A Cambridgeshire spokesman said: "Residents came forward and told us that they wanted average speed cameras. A 1,600-signature petition called for effective action to enforce safe speeds on the stretch of road, where five people died in accidents during a six-week period.
