Up to £1000 fine for out of date photocard licence

Defensive Driver Training - image of photocard driving licence

Drivers who either passed a driving test in 1998 or exchanged their paper licence for a photocard licence, need to update their photocard licence now.

The DVLA are issuing reminders to people whose photograph is about to expire. Failure to renew in time could mean a £1000 fine if you do not renew before your current photo expires.

There is no need to retake a test, but it is a mandatory requirement that the photograph on the licence is renewed every 10 years. To check the photograph expiry date check item 4b where the date is printed.
