SAFED Driver Training - Course Programme

One day SAFED driver training programme approved by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT) towards the periodic training requirement of 35 hours. One instructor can train one or two candidates per day. For successful completion of the course the course must take place off the job and the full programme timetable must be covered.

Aims and objectives of the programme. Licence check for class of vehicle, penalty points and any other restrictions

PRELIMINARY

Information on the training vehicle, its characteristics including weight, height, width and length and responsibility to comply with rules and regulations for that vehicle when driving.

Eyesight check. Hazard perception discussion using DSA Roadsense material.

Check It Out video on vehicle checking procedures and trailer safety checks.

Safety checks to be completed by candidates using Documents 3 and 4 and pass or fail recorded on Document 9

Candidates assessment drive over a varied route. SAFED Instructor takes detailed notes on route, time taken, distance, number of gear changes, fuel used, mpg using Document 9 at the end of the first run

INSTRUCTION

Faults highlighted during the assessment drive are discussed in the classroom and best practice in safe and fuel efficient driving explained. The video "Save it! - The Road to Fuel Efficiency " is shown and benefits and tips discussed.

SECOND RUN  (one hour per candidate)

Each candidate drives to demonstrate the techniques learned with help and guidance from the instructor. The SAFED Instructor again uses Document 5 to record detailed performance on the route. New mpg, distance, gear changes, fuel used figures are transferred to Document 9

UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE EXERCISES

Two theory exercises are conducted covering both safe and fuel efficient driving issues. Results of the theory test are recorded on Document 9.

ASSESSMENT  SUMMARY 

FEEDBACK REPORT

Summary of the day's events, highlighting the difference between the two run. Discuss theory tests, knowledge gained and improvements in driving performance. Completed report returned to candidates. The final grade and instructor's and candidate's comments discussed. Target fuel consumption performance figure agreed. Candidates to provide feedback. Certificate issued to successful candidates.
